AISEO / AI visibility
Getting your brand surfaced and recommended inside AI-generated answers, not just the ten blue links.
In depth
What it really means
AISEO, or AI visibility, is the practice of getting your brand mentioned, quoted and recommended inside AI-generated answers. Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. AI visibility optimizes for being the source an assistant reaches for when it writes the answer.
The urgency is a numbers problem. Around 68% of US Google searches now end without a click to any website, and on searches that trigger an AI Overview that figure rises to roughly 83%. If your entire strategy assumes a click, most of your audience has already left the building. AI visibility is the work of getting counted in the answers that replaced those clicks.
AI visibility rate = (prompts where your brand appears ÷ total prompts tested) × 100
Build a fixed set of 30 to 50 buying-stage prompts your ICP would actually type. Run them monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode. Log three things per prompt: did you appear, in what position, and was the description accurate. A B2B SaaS brand with real category presence typically lands somewhere between 15% and 40% on its own core prompts. Below 10% means the models do not associate you with your category yet.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Reaches buyers earlier, inside the tool where they now do first-pass research.
- Compounds with SEO, because the same authority signals feed both surfaces.
- A mention inside an answer carries implicit endorsement that a blue link does not.
- Competition is still thin in most B2B categories, so early effort goes further than it does in classic SEO.
Cons
- Measurement is fuzzy. There is no single position, and answers vary run to run for the same prompt.
- You influence what a model says, you do not control it.
- Attribution is hard. Assistant referral traffic is small even when visibility is high, so the value shows up in branded search and demo requests instead.
- The surface moves fast, so tactics that work this quarter can fade by the next.
The mistake people make
Treating AI visibility as a new channel that needs new content. It is mostly a re-packaging problem. Most brands already have the expertise sitting in long-form posts, buried under intros, and written in a shape no model can lift. Restructure what you have before you commission anything new.
Best practices
- Publish clear, factual, self-contained sections a model can quote without context.
- Earn mentions on the third-party sites models already trust: G2, Reddit, industry publications, comparison roundups.
- Keep your own pricing, features and positioning accurate and crawlable, since models repeat what they find.
- Build topical depth so you are the obvious source rather than one of twelve.
- Add comparison and FAQ content that answers directly, since those formats get lifted most often.
- Track brand mentions and sentiment monthly, not once.
FAQs
Is AISEO different from SEO?
Related, with a different target. SEO aims for a ranked link. AISEO aims to be cited inside a generated answer. Strong SEO helps, and roughly 60% of what you do overlaps, but the measurement and the formats differ.
How do I measure AI visibility?
Run a fixed prompt set monthly across the major assistants and log appearance, position and accuracy. Our free AI visibility checklist walks through the setup.
Which tools matter?
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini cover most of the volume. Claude and Grok matter in technical categories.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
Not reliably, and not yet in a way worth budgeting for. Placement comes from being a genuinely trusted, well-structured source.
Is AI visibility worth it yet?
Yes, and the case gets stronger each quarter. Buyers are already researching inside these tools, so absence there means missing them at the stage where preference forms.
