GEO

Generative Engine Optimization: shaping content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT and AI Overviews cite you.

In depth

What it really means

GEO is optimizing to be the source an AI answer engine quotes when it generates a response. SEO targets a ranked link. GEO targets being named, quoted and recommended inside the answer.

The term is not agency invention. It comes from a 2024 KDD paper by researchers at Princeton, IIT Delhi, Georgia Tech and the Allen Institute, which built a benchmark of 10,000 queries and tested which content changes actually moved citation rates. That study is why GEO advice can be more specific than most new-discipline advice.

What the research measured

Across the GEO-bench tests, the changes that lifted visibility in generated answers by up to 40% were consistent and unglamorous:

Adding citations to credible sources in your own copy

Adding statistics with numbers attached to claims

Adding quotations from named experts

Improving fluency and readability of the passage

Adding authoritative-sounding, specific phrasing

Keyword stuffing measured as one of the least effective changes, and in some domains it reduced visibility. The pattern is that engines favour passages that look like they were written by someone who checked their facts.

What Google actually says, which is worth quoting honestly

Google’s own documentation on AI features states plainly that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new machine-readable files or special markup. Take that seriously, because it separates real GEO from the packages being sold around it.

The two positions are compatible. Google is describing eligibility, which is ordinary SEO. The GEO research is describing selection, which is what makes an engine choose your passage over another eligible one. Anyone selling you an AI-specific file format is answering the wrong question.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • The tactics are evidence-based, unusually for a discipline this new.
  • Most of the work improves the page for humans too, so there is little downside risk.
  • Competition remains thin in B2B categories, so results come faster than equivalent SEO effort.

Cons

  • Results vary run to run for the same prompt, so measurement needs volume to be meaningful.
  • Little traffic attribution, which makes it hard to justify against a paid channel.
  • Engines change their retrieval behaviour without notice.
  • Vendors are already selling GEO packages with no measurement behind them, so the category has a credibility problem you inherit.

The mistake people make

Building a separate “GEO content” workstream. The research finding is that GEO is mostly a rewriting standard applied to content you already have: attach a number to every claim, cite the source, quote a named person, and break the page into self-contained passages. Apply that standard to your existing top 30 pages before commissioning anything new.
