Visibility score

A blended metric combining how often AI assistants mention you, cite you and describe you favorably across a fixed set of queries.

In depth

What it really means

No single AI metric captures the picture. Citation share misses mentions with no link. Share of model misses whether you were cited as a source. Brand sentiment misses volume entirely. A visibility score rolls them into one number for reporting.

The honest caveat: there is no industry standard, and every tool computes it differently. That makes cross-tool comparison meaningless. It is useful for tracking your own trend and reporting to leadership, not for benchmarking against a published figure.

How it works

  1. Define and freeze a query set that reflects buyer questions.
  2. Run it repeatedly across each assistant.
  3. Record mentions, citations and sentiment for every run.
  4. Apply your weights and track the composite over time.
the formula

Visibility score = (w1 x mention rate) + (w2 x citation rate) + (w3 x sentiment score), across a fixed query set

Set the weights to match your funnel. Awareness-led brands weight mentions higher. Consideration-led brands weight citations higher. Publish your weights alongside the score, or it is not interpretable by anyone but you. Never compare your score against a number produced by a different tool.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • One number that leadership can follow month to month.
  • It captures visibility that produces no click, which analytics cannot see.
  • Weighting makes it adaptable to different funnel shapes.

Cons

  • No standard definition, so it is not comparable between tools.
  • A composite hides which component moved, so you still need the breakdown.
  • Query set choice heavily determines the result.

Common mistakes

  • Reporting the composite without the component breakdown.
  • Comparing your score against a competitor’s from a different tool.
  • Changing weights or query set mid-period, which breaks the trend.
  • Treating it as an absolute rather than a relative trend measure.

FAQs

What is an AI visibility score?

A blended metric combining mention rate, citation rate and sentiment across a fixed query set, used to track AI visibility as one number.

Is there a standard visibility score?

No. Every tool computes it differently with different weights and query sets, so scores are not comparable across tools. Use it for your own trend only.

What should a visibility score include?

Mention rate, citation rate and sentiment at minimum, weighted to match your funnel, measured per assistant across a query set you have frozen.

How often should I measure it?

Monthly works for most brands. More often adds noise, less often makes it hard to connect movement to the content that caused it.
