Prompt volume

How often a given question gets asked of AI assistants. The AI equivalent of search volume, except no reliable public data exists for it.

In depth

What it really means

Search volume built modern SEO. Prompt volume would do the same for AI visibility, and it is not available. Assistant providers do not publish query data, so every tool claiming prompt volume is modelling or inferring it.

That changes how you prioritize. Instead of sorting a keyword list by volume, you work from qualitative evidence: what buyers tell you they asked, what sales hears repeatedly, what support tickets keep raising. Slower, and closer to reality than a modelled number pretending to be measured.

How it works

  1. Collect the questions buyers actually asked assistants, by asking them directly.
  2. Mine support tickets and sales call notes for recurring phrasing.
  3. Use People Also Ask and related searches as a directional proxy.
  4. Group into themes and prioritize by buying intent rather than estimated frequency.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Forces you to talk to customers, which produces better content anyway.
  • Buying intent is a better prioritization axis than raw frequency.
  • Competitors relying on keyword tools miss the questions you find this way.

Cons

  • Slow and manual compared with pulling a keyword list.
  • No hard number to justify the work to a finance-minded stakeholder.
  • Sample sizes are small, so themes are directional rather than precise.

Common mistakes

  • Treating vendor prompt-volume figures as measured data. They are estimates.
  • Using keyword volume as a proxy, which misses every follow-up question.
  • Prioritizing frequency over intent, when the rare question is often the deciding one.
  • Building the prompt list internally instead of collecting real ones.

FAQs

What is prompt volume?

How often a question gets asked of AI assistants. It is the conceptual equivalent of search volume, but no provider publishes the underlying data.

Can I get real prompt volume data?

No. Assistant providers do not publish query data. Tools that offer prompt volume are modelling or inferring it, so treat the numbers as directional.

How do I prioritize without volume data?

By buying intent and by what customers tell you they actually asked. Ask new customers what they typed while evaluating and log the exact phrasing.

Is search volume a good proxy?

Only for opening questions. It captures nothing about follow-up turns, which is where most buying decisions get made.
