AI Overviews
Google's AI-generated summary above the organic results, written from several sources at once and shown with links to the pages it drew from.
In depth
What it really means
AI Overviews sit at the top of the results page and answer the query directly. They are built from multiple pages rather than lifted from one, which is the real difference from a featured snippet. A snippet is a quote. An overview is a synthesis.
The job changes from ranking first to being one of the sources the synthesis draws on. Those two are related but not the same. Pages outside the top ten get cited regularly, and pages ranking first get left out, because the overview is assembled from query fan-out across several sub-questions rather than from the single ranked list you see below it.
How it works
- Google decides the query is a fit for an overview. Informational and comparison queries qualify far more often than navigational or transactional ones.
- The query is fanned out into related sub-questions.
- Sources are retrieved for each sub-question, drawn from a wider pool than the visible top ten.
- A model writes a synthesized answer and attaches source links to the claims.
- The overview renders above the organic results, pushing them down the page.
Pros & cons
Pros
- A citation puts you above every organic result, including competitors who outrank you.
- Google showing your page as a source carries implied endorsement.
- You reach people who would never have scrolled to the links.
Cons
- When the overview fully answers the question, the click does not happen.
- You influence citation, you do not control it, and there is no ranking to check.
- Coverage shifts constantly, so a query that triggers an overview this month may not next month.
Common mistakes
- Measuring AI Overview performance by clicks alone. Impressions and citations move independently of clicks.
- Assuming ranking first earns the citation. It correlates, it does not guarantee.
- Burying the answer under 400 words of preamble. Overviews pull the clean, direct passage.
- Writing only for the head query and ignoring the sub-questions the fan-out actually retrieves against.
- Panicking and deleting informational content when clicks drop, which removes the pages that were earning the citations.
Best practices
- Answer the query in the first two sentences under the heading, then expand.
- Give every section a heading phrased the way a person would ask it.
- Cover the sub-questions around the topic, not just the head term.
- Keep facts specific and current. Vague, undated claims do not get picked.
- Track which of your queries trigger overviews and whether you appear, using an AI visibility tracking tool.
FAQs
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results, synthesized from several sources and shown with links to those sources, above the organic links.
How do I get cited in AI Overviews?
Answer the question directly and early, structure the page so each section stands alone, keep facts specific and current, and cover the sub-questions around the topic so you match more of the fan-out.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?
They reduce clicks on queries where the summary is a complete answer, which is mostly simple informational queries. Commercial and comparison queries hold up better because people still want to evaluate options themselves.
Do AI Overviews appear on every search?
No. They skew heavily toward informational and comparison queries and appear far less on navigational and transactional ones. Coverage changes often.
How is an AI Overview different from a featured snippet?
A featured snippet quotes one passage from one page. An AI Overview writes a new answer from several pages and cites each of them. A snippet you can win by having the best passage. An overview you win by being part of the set.
