Rich result

A search listing enhanced with extra visual detail such as star ratings, prices, FAQs or images, made possible by structured data.

In depth

What it really means

A rich result takes up more space and draws more attention than a plain blue link. That is the whole benefit: same position, larger footprint, higher click-through.

Eligibility comes from valid schema markup matching the real content on the page. Eligibility is not entitlement. Google decides whether to show the enhancement, and it has retired result types before, most notably shrinking FAQ rich results in 2023.

How it works

  1. You add structured data describing the content type.
  2. Google validates it and checks it matches the visible page.
  3. The page becomes eligible for the corresponding rich result.
  4. Google decides case by case whether to display it.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Larger listing footprint and higher click-through at the same ranking position.
  • Communicates price, rating or availability before the click.
  • The same markup helps AI systems interpret the page.

Cons

  • Eligibility does not guarantee display.
  • Google retires result types without warning.
  • Marking up content that is not visible risks a structured data manual action.

Common mistakes

  • Marking up FAQs that do not appear on the page, which is a policy violation.
  • Assuming valid markup means the rich result will show.
  • Skipping validation, so errors silently block eligibility.
  • Chasing rich results for types Google has already deprecated.

FAQs

What is a rich result?

A search listing enhanced with extra detail such as ratings, prices, images or FAQs, generated from structured data on the page.

How do I get a rich result?

Add valid schema markup matching content that is genuinely visible on the page, then validate it. Google decides whether to display the enhancement.

Do rich results improve rankings?

Not directly. They increase click-through at the same position, which is where the value sits.

Why is my rich result not showing?

Common causes are validation errors, markup that does not match visible content, a result type Google has deprecated, or Google simply choosing not to display it.
