Share of voice
How much of a topic's total search visibility your brand owns versus competitors.
In depth
What it really means
Share of voice measures how much of the available visibility for a set of keywords you capture against everyone else competing for it. Instead of tracking one ranking, it tells you your slice of a whole topic.
It reframes SEO from keywords to market presence, which is usually the question the person funding the work is actually asking. A rising share means you are taking ground. A falling one means you are losing it, even in a quarter where several individual rankings improved.
Share of voice = (your weighted visibility across the keyword set ÷ total weighted visibility of all players) × 100
Where weighted visibility = Σ (search volume × click-through rate at your position) for every keyword in the set. Worked example. Three keywords, all 1,000 monthly searches. You rank 1st (roughly 28% CTR), 5th (roughly 6%), and 12th (roughly 1%). Your weighted visibility is 280 + 60 + 10 = 350. If the total available across all ranking players is 2,400, your share of voice is 14.6%. Move the position-5 ranking to position 2 and you add about 100 points, taking you to 18.8%. That is how you show the value of a single improvement in a number a CEO understands.
The AI-era companion metric
Share of model = (AI answers mentioning you ÷ total AI answers for the prompt set) × 100
Run both. Search share of voice and share of model diverge often, and the gap is informative. High search share with low model share usually means you rank but nobody talks about you off-site, which is a PR and community problem rather than an SEO one.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Survives contact with an executive audience better than a ranking report.
- Normalizes for market conditions. When everyone’s traffic falls, share shows whether you actually lost.
- Directly comparable against named competitors.
- Ties individual content work to a topic-level outcome.
Cons
- Entirely dependent on the keyword set you chose, which makes it easy to flatter yourself.
- Tool-dependent. Different platforms weight visibility differently and produce different numbers.
- Says nothing about revenue on its own.
- Slow-moving, so it is a quarterly metric rather than a monthly one.
The mistake people make
Choosing the keyword set after seeing the results. If you build the set from terms you already rank for, share of voice will look excellent and mean nothing. Define the set once, from the queries a buyer would use across the whole journey including ones you currently lose, then freeze it for at least four quarters. A set that never changes is the only kind that shows a trend.
Best practices
- Define a keyword set that represents the market, including terms you lose today.
- Freeze the set for at least a year so the trend is real.
- Benchmark against three to five named competitors, not the entire web.
- Report the trend, not the absolute number, since the absolute depends on the tool.
- Attribute movements to the specific clusters and refreshes that caused them.
- Pair it with share of model to see the AI side of the same question.
FAQs
What is share of voice in SEO?
Your slice of the total search visibility for a defined keyword set, measured against competitors. It measures topic presence rather than one ranking.
How is share of voice calculated?
Sum your weighted visibility across the set, where each keyword contributes search volume multiplied by the click-through rate at your position, then divide by the total across all players.
Why track it instead of rankings?
Because it answers the question leadership is asking: are we winning this topic. Individual rankings can improve while share falls.
What keyword set should I use?
The set representing your market and buying journey, defined before you look at results, and left unchanged for at least a year.
What is a good share of voice?
It depends entirely on your category’s concentration. Above 25% usually indicates a defensible position. The trend matters more than the level.
