Long-tail keyword

A longer, more specific search phrase with lower volume, clearer intent and less competition than a head term.

In depth

What it really means

Long-tail keywords trade volume for specificity. “CRM” is a head term with enormous volume and no discernible intent. “CRM for a 20-person sales team with HubSpot integration” has almost no volume and tells you exactly what the person needs and roughly how close they are to buying.

AI search has made these more valuable, not less. Conversational queries are long-tail by nature, and query fan-out means owning a specific sub-question can earn a citation on the broad query you could never rank for.

How it works

  1. A user types or speaks a specific, multi-word query.
  2. Fewer pages target it, so competition is low.
  3. Intent is legible from the phrasing itself.
  4. In AI search, the specific query may be one branch of a broader fan-out.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Far easier to rank for than head terms.
  • Intent is clear, so conversion rates are higher.
  • They match how people phrase questions to AI assistants.

Cons

  • Individually tiny volume, so you need many of them.
  • Keyword tools underreport or show zero volume for the most specific ones.
  • It takes real content volume to cover a meaningful set.

Common mistakes

  • Dismissing a keyword because a tool reports zero volume. Tools underreport the tail badly.
  • Building a separate thin page per long-tail variant, which creates cannibalization.
  • Chasing tail volume with no commercial relevance.
  • Ignoring the constraint phrasings buyers use: team size, price, integration, compliance.

FAQs

What is a long-tail keyword?

A specific multi-word query where the phrasing itself reveals what the person needs and roughly how close they are to buying. Low volume individually, high intent.

Why target long-tail keywords?

They are easier to rank for and convert better, because the specificity of the phrasing reveals exactly what the person needs.

Are long-tail keywords still relevant with AI search?

More so. Conversational queries are long-tail by nature, and owning a specific sub-question can earn a citation on a broad query you could not rank for.

How do I find long-tail keywords with no volume data?

From your own sales calls, support tickets and People Also Ask boxes. Keyword tools systematically underreport the tail.
