Keyword difficulty

A third-party estimate, usually 0 to 100, of how hard it would be to rank on page one for a keyword, based mostly on the backlink strength of pages currently ranking.

In depth

What it really means

Keyword difficulty is a proxy. It reads the link profiles of the current top ten and infers how much authority you would need to join them. Every tool calculates it differently, so the same keyword scores differently in Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz.

What it consistently misses is intent mismatch. A keyword scored 15 can be unwinnable if the entire first page is product pages and you are publishing a blog post. The SERP itself tells you more than the score does.

How it works

  1. The tool reads the link profiles of the pages currently ranking.
  2. It infers how much authority a new entrant would need to join them.
  3. That is normalized onto a 0 to 100 scale.
  4. Intent, content quality and SERP layout are not factored in.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Fast triage across a large keyword list.
  • Correlates loosely with real effort, which is better than nothing.
  • Useful for spotting where a small site has no chance.

Cons

  • Backlink-weighted, so it undervalues topical relevance and content quality.
  • Not comparable between tools.
  • Blind to intent mismatch, which is the more common reason for failure.

Common mistakes

  • Filtering a keyword list by difficulty alone and never opening the SERP.
  • Comparing a score from one tool against a target set in another.
  • Assuming low difficulty means low effort, when the page type required may be one you cannot produce.
  • Ignoring that AI answers now sit above the results, changing what ranking is worth.

FAQs

What is keyword difficulty?

A third-party estimate of how hard it is to rank on page one for a keyword, calculated mostly from the backlink strength of the pages currently ranking.

Is keyword difficulty accurate?

Directionally. It is backlink-weighted, so it misses intent mismatch and content quality, which are often the real reasons a page fails to rank.

What is a good difficulty score to target?

It depends entirely on your own authority. A new site should look below 20. An established site in its category can compete far higher.

Should I only target low-difficulty keywords?

No. That produces traffic with no commercial value. Sort by business value first, then use difficulty to sequence the work.
