Faceted navigation

Filter and sort controls that generate a new URL for each combination, common on ecommerce and large catalog sites.

In depth

What it really means

Faceted navigation is excellent for users and hostile to crawlers. Five filters with five options each can generate millions of URL combinations, nearly all of them thin, duplicated and worthless to index.

It is the single most common cause of genuine crawl budget problems. If a site has a crawl budget issue at all, faceted navigation is usually why.

How it works

  1. A user applies a filter, generating a URL with parameters.
  2. Each combination is a distinct crawlable URL.
  3. Crawlers follow them and burn budget on near-identical thin pages.
  4. Genuinely important pages get crawled less often as a result.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Filter combinations matching real search demand can rank well.
  • Excellent for user experience and conversion.
  • Controllable once you decide which facets matter.

Cons

  • Generates enormous numbers of low-value URLs.
  • Creates heavy duplication.
  • Requires deliberate configuration that is easy to get wrong.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving all combinations crawlable and indexable by default.
  • Blocking parameters in robots.txt when the pages are already indexed, so the noindex never gets read.
  • Indexing every combination in the hope that some rank.

FAQs

What is faceted navigation?

Filter and sort controls that create a distinct URL for each combination, common on ecommerce and catalog sites.

Why is faceted navigation an SEO problem?

It can generate millions of thin, near-duplicate URLs, which consumes crawl budget and dilutes signals across combinations nobody searches for.

How do I handle faceted navigation?

Index only the combinations with real search demand. Noindex the rest while keeping them crawlable, and canonicalize where a filtered view duplicates the category page.
