Entity SEO
Optimizing around entities, the distinct people, products, brands and concepts an engine recognizes as things, and the relationships between them, rather than around keyword strings.
In depth
What it really means
An entity is a thing with an identity, not a phrase. ‘Apple’ the company and ‘apple’ the fruit share a string and are different entities. Engines resolve which one you mean from context, then reason about it using everything they know about that entity and what it connects to.
For AI visibility this is the difference between being findable and being recommended. A model recommends a brand when it holds a confident association between that brand and a category. Weak or contradictory entity signals produce a brand the model has heard of but will not put on a shortlist, which is the most common failure state for mid-market B2B.
How it works
- Engines extract candidate entities from text.
- Each candidate is disambiguated against a knowledge graph to resolve which thing is meant.
- Relationships between entities get recorded, such as company to category, product to feature, person to company.
- Confidence in each relationship is scored from how consistently sources agree.
- At answer time the model traverses those relationships to decide which entities belong in the answer.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Strong entity signals compound and are hard for competitors to copy quickly.
- It works across every engine at once, since they all rely on entity resolution.
- It attaches your brand to a category, which is what earns recommendations rather than mentions.
Cons
- It is slow. Entity associations build over quarters, not weeks.
- Much of it depends on third-party sources you do not control.
- Progress is hard to measure directly, so it competes badly for budget against trackable tactics.
Common mistakes
- Describing yourself differently on every property, so the entity never resolves cleanly.
- Inventing a category name nobody searches for, which leaves the model with no category to attach you to.
- Adding Organization schema and stopping, as if markup alone builds an entity.
- Leaving stale funding, headcount and product details on Crunchbase, LinkedIn and Wikipedia.
- Chasing mentions without topical context, so you get named but never linked to a category.
Best practices
- Use one exact brand name, one boilerplate description and one set of core facts everywhere.
- Name the category you compete in using the words buyers already use for it.
- Add Organization, Product and Person schema with sameAs pointing at your authoritative profiles.
- Keep third-party profiles current: LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2, Wikidata.
- Earn mentions that put your brand and your category in the same sentence.
FAQs
What is an entity in SEO?
A distinct thing an engine recognizes as having identity: a person, company, product, place or concept. Entities are resolved from context rather than matched as strings, so ‘Apple’ the company and ‘apple’ the fruit are different entities.
What is entity SEO?
Optimizing so engines recognize your brand as a well-defined entity and confidently associate it with your category and topics, rather than optimizing for keyword strings.
Why do entities matter for AI answers?
Models recommend brands they hold confident category associations for. If the association is weak or contradictory, the model may know you exist but will not include you in a shortlist.
How do I strengthen my entity?
Be identical about your name, description and core facts everywhere. Name your category in words buyers use. Add Organization schema with sameAs links. Keep third-party profiles current and earn mentions that pair your brand with your category.
How long does entity building take?
Quarters rather than weeks. Consistency compounds slowly, which is also why competitors cannot catch up quickly once you are established.
